hush

Hush

hush
the last man on Earth is trying to speak
his final words

only
there’s nothing left to say
and no-one to hear it

between sand and waves
a distant piano echoes that sad song
you heard on the radio
last time you were here

there were children, down there
giggling as they prodded a jellyfish
and splashed in the sea
their footprints are gone now, it seems

wasn’t there a fisherman tending his nets?
and someone cycling, with little success
tyres sinking in the sand

and you look around as time shakes it’s weary head
laughing at the mess we made of it all
wondering how we could have got it so wrong

when the books and photographs return to the soil
when the things we achieved and built are all gone
will anything or anyone even know we were here?

you’re heading out with a whimper
sad regrets
no showdown, no grand finale
there will be no encore tonight

and on the cusp of a sigh
you take your seat for the last few lines
as the curtain begins its descent

this is it
gasp salted sea air
heavy eyes closing
sad song beginning to fade

.

it’s quiet now
deathly quiet
but for the lapping waves and the howling wind
and so may it continue

Respice Finem

respice finem (regard the end)

Coastline
disappearing into sea,
eroding lands
shifting sands

Barriers fight
the devastating tides,
man’s best hand
only slowing the decline

Markers of progress
or lack thereof,
fragile and helpless
and doomed from the first

Perhaps a symbol
of our inevitability –
nothing lasts forever
regard the end

begin again

begin again

So it goes
The journey ends,
Faint light on the water
A long lost friend

On a tide fast deserting
Pointing us home,
To a past best forgotten
And a future unknown

Let’s raise a glass to the darkness
And the light that descends,
Burn all the maps
And begin again

a glorious darkness

a glorious darkness

She arches her spine from the ocean
To see what we see in the sea
And falls back, overthrown by emotion
What a glorious darkness to reign upon me

The focus of my work is the landscape & seascapes of Scotland, predominantly shot in black & white. Photographing often deserted stretches of coastline creates an amazing sense of peace and tranquility that I try to get across in my images, with nothing but the camera and the vast endless ocean for company. I love being able to almost control the ocean through the lens, turning a choppy tide into a calm silky wash using long exposure. It is this that provides my constant inspiration and keeps drawing me back to the sea.

Thank you for taking the time to :+fav: , :+devwatch: or comment on any of my work, any support or feedback is genuinely appreciated.

This is Scotland... part 5 (+ a goodbye of sorts)

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 3, 2009, 5:48 AM

“Rest not. Life is sweeping by; go and dare before you die. Something mighty and sublime, leave behind to conquer time” (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

This is to be my last journal entry for the time being, I’ve decided to take a step back from deviantart for a while and see if the art world can be conquered elsewhere. Next month will mark my 1st anniversary as a deviant, and having just scraped past the 3000 pageviews mark I don’t think I’ve made the progress I’d hoped to. I’ve never been one to crave popularity but I think every artist, photographer, writer or musician ultimately wants their work to provoke a response or emotion from as many people as possible, in whatever form that may take. If there’s little or no reaction then it’s difficult to judge whether the work is deemed good or not, to learn and improve, or if it provokes the response the creator intended. So rather than just continuing along the same path waiting for something to happen I’m going to try another route. Or as in one of my images, burn all the maps and begin again.

“There comes a time when everyone wants to re-evaluate their life and what they want out of it” (the greatest philosopher of our time, Mutya Sugababe)

So I’m going to start being more active on other art sites and see if I can get a breakthrough that I’ve not managed here. I’m going to really concentrate on further improving my technique, re-evaluate everything I’ve produced to date and try to focus on what has really worked best. Then hopefully come back with original images that will knock people’s socks off, which admittedly isn’t easy in landscape/seascape photography, but that’s got to be the aim. In the meantime a big thank you to everyone who has faved, collected, commented and glomped, I’ve met many great people here and seen much to be inspired by so far :glomp:

“In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
and he carries the reminders, of every glove that laid him down
and cut him till he cried out, in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
but the fighter still remains”
(Bob Dylan)

So that’s it for now, aside from one last “This is Scotland” feature below (though there are still various people and images I wanted to feature which haven’t fitted the themes yet, so probably not the last ever one). Support, fave and do your worst to the photographers shooting Scotland at night. And in the words of the governor of California, I’ll be back ;)

P.S. Why is Batman in the new Terminator movie? :giggle:

:bye:
